Synthèse Elevage conducted a field trial to assess the impact of PRO-VITOS® L (25-OH-D₃) in the context of Enterococcus cecorum infection. The results confirm its benefits for health, welfare and zootechnical performance.
Locomotor disorders, mortality and condemnations at the slaughterhouse linked to Enterococcus cecorum infections represent a major technical and economic challenge in broiler farming. In this infectious context, confirmed by bacteriological analysis, a field trial was conducted to assess the impact of PRO-VITOS® L on zootechnical performance.
A protocol adapted to growth
The trial was carried out on two successive flocks of ROSS 308 broilers, reared in two identical 1 300 m² houses on the same site, with flocks placed and removed on the same day. The study period ran from August to October. To minimise the building effect, the Test and Control batches were swapped between the two batches. The PRO-VITOS® L program consisted of 3 administrations, positioned at key stages of animal growth:
- 1st administration (D3 to D6): 850 mL per 1000 L of drinking water
- 2nd administration (D10 to D13): 850 mL per 1,000 L of drinking water
- 3rd administration (D20 to D22): 1 L per 1,000 L of drinking water

Benefits for health and welfare
The use of PRO-VITOS® L has demonstrated several significant benefits compared to the control groups. Firstly, there is an improvement in health and welfare, with a reduction in mortality (Graphs 1 and 2), a decrease in the number of lame and culled chickens and a reduction in slaughter condemnations (Graph 3).
Benefits for zootechnical performance
Furthermore, zootechnical performance is better with higher average live weights (Graphs 4 and 5). The use of PRO-VITOS® L improved economic results thanks to an increase of total weight sold: +5% for batch 1 (+3 295 kg) and +6% for batch 2 (+3 728 kg).
This field trial demonstrates that PRO-VITOS® L is a relevant solution for broiler farms and acts as an effective technical and economic lever, serving both profitability and animal welfare.
